Workshop introduction:
Explaining school identity can be challenging, especially explaining to uninformed outsiders. For instance, what exactly is catholic primary education? One could mention churches as founders, values rooted in religion, modern day tolerance, community building, etc. And end up with a typical criticism: A. there is no such th ing as catholic calculation, and B. religion belongs behind the front door. Such conversations can be energy sinks. We see teachers trying to avoid them by disregarding the whole subject. In searching for new ways at the KOC foundation in Groningen (primary education, 2 schools) we constructed Denkspoor ('Think track'). Denkspoor is a model, a method and a tool. As a model, it proposes four main categories for thinking about (school) identity: sources, values, attitudes and exercise. As a method it invites to fill these categories with specific elements, and to create a multipath narrative by connecting the elements across category boundaries. As a tool it is a free mind ma p program on the KOC website that enables a group to draw a Denkspoor during a meeting.Denkspoor helps connecting one rich world (inspiration sources) to another rich world (education and training). The Denkspoor method assists school directors and teachers in explaining the value base of the school and specific school activities such as the christmas musical. Teachers may use Denkspoor as a tool for Werte-Bildung in their class rooms. The workshop introduces the Denkspoor model, method and tool. Theory and examples are presented and discussed. We set up a Denkspoor or two in plenary. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet and make and present their own Denkspoor.
